Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone have recently received a generous donation of new chess boards and pieces from local professor Patrick McGhee.

A chess group will now be formed with critical thinking, problem solving and planning being just some of the benefits that playing will potentially bring. Professor McGhee runs local counselling and coaching business, Practical CBT, which also delivers high-quality training workshops on mental health across the UK for psychotherapists, health care workers, educators and the general public.

Commenting on the donation, Patrick said: “After a recent tour of the facilities, I was blown away by Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone and the work they do within the local community. I’ve always loved chess and really wanted to give back to the young people so thought this was the perfect idea. With the right support and training, playing chess can help young people improve concentration, develop creativity and build confidence. It also teaches people how to learn from mistakes and get on with others.”

He added: “Hopefully we’ll see young people start to engage with chess and it will become a regular activity during sessions. I am also delighted to donate to Inspire on their brand-new monthly supporter programme. The facility is fantastic and as a business passionate about our local community we decided to show our support to Chorley’s next generation.”

Business and Community Fundraiser, Josh Vosper said: “On behalf of everyone at Inspire, I’d like to thank Patrick for his amazing support. Since joining the fundraising team in January, we’ve been putting a lot of effort into our brand-new supporter programme and it’s wonderful to have Practical CBT involved.”

He added: “As a local charity, we are appealing on the local business community to help our cause through monthly giving at affordable levels. With donations starting at just £100 a month we’re offering a number of exciting tangible benefits including social PR, supporter plaques and your logo featured on our supporter wall. With the support received, we will be the difference for Chorley both now and for the future.”
